The hours ticked by as Elena dozed on and off. Every waking moment was dominated by thoughts of Cameron and Olivia. Fantasies drifted through her mind. Their first steps and words. Herself, walking them to school each morning. Olivia’s wedding dress.

None of that could happen, however. In a few short days she’d have to turn her beautiful babies over to Sonia; she cursed the day she made that damn agreement.

Logic battled with emotion inside Elena. She pictured herself in her tiny flat with her babies, two cots squeezed into her small bedroom. There was barely enough room for her, let alone her twins, and Elena’s neighbours wouldn’t appreciate screaming newborns keeping them awake at night. Neither would her landlord. Should he choose, he could make her homeless, and then what could she do? She’d end up with nowhere to live, Olivia and Cameron dependent on her, at the mercy of Social Services to house them. Her babies deserved better.
